Tesco Value Scotch Whisky

This is probably the cheapest whisky known to man (£6.99 for a big 70cl bottle). The quality is indicated by the Tesco Value blue and white stripes on the label. Stuart was given a bottle by the Secret Santa, but few are brave enough to try any. Here's a review by Matt:

"It's hard to know where to begin with this one really. The first mental alarm bell goes off on reading the ingredients list (not to mention that whisky shouldn't even have an ingredients list): "Scotch Whisky [!], Demineralised Water, Colour (Caramel)". This is far from an encouraging start.

The nose is probably best described as caustic. The fumes coming from this dram were making my eyes water as soon as the cap was off the bottle. Grain whisky is overpowering at the best of times, but this was quite unbelievable. The palate and finish were both heavily acidic with a distinctly anaesthetic effect to round the whole experience off.

This product is best likened to drain cleaner. All I can really say is that I wish I could have finished my experiment in trying to freeze the "whisky". " - Matt

Update: Actually, the experiment did finish (meaning we found the bottle sat in the freezer the morning after our party). Surprisingly, it didn't freeze... which is about the only thing it has in common with any other Scotch Whisky. - Simon

This stuff gave me the sort of shudder that you remember as a kid when your aunt hands you a glass of her whisky mac to try (blended scotch with ginger wine, eurgh). Avoid at all costs! - Chris
