Wiser's Reserve
From WhIsKi
All the way from Canada, let me introduce the King of the Grains, Wiser's Reserve. Canadian Whisky as a class is known in Canada as Rye Whisky on account of the primary grain being rye. Today, there is not much rye used in the mix with the bulk of the alcohol coming from unnamed sources.
I selected Wiser's simply because it is the brand of choice at my parent's home in Ontario, where they go through a bottle a week in Manhattans. The "Reserve" is a premium Wiser's brand.
The nose is harsh, as are grain whisky's in general. However, the oak comes through as in a Bourbon. The palate is smooth, with lots of wood (bananas) and a sweetness in the soft water balanced by a bitterness. Some report maple. Clearly nothing to do with sense-expectation association, there.
Note, the spelling of whisky matches the Scottish instead of the American.
